In our February story “Reversing Heart Disease,” we learned that diet and lifestyle changes can go a long way towards easing the symptoms of coronary artery disease. This story directed readers to the following blog question: Do you or a loved one suffer from heart problems and, if so, what natural steps are you taking to improve your cardiovascular health? This response indicates that while coping with a chronic condition is challenging, it can be done.
My wife has had very high cholesterol over the past years. With her family history of heart disease, we were getting concerned as she approached age 65. She had tried all of the prescription medications for controlling cholesterol without success because she developed severe muscle problems.
Everyday Cooking with Dr. Dean Ornish (Harper) is her main dietary guide. She also uses Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn (Avery/Penguin). The measures in these books are extreme and one would have to be very devoted. Dr. Ornish’s book permits some animal products such as egg whites, skim milk, nonfat this and that, etc.
My wife has been on the diet for four months. Her lipids rose after the first two weeks but have been falling ever since, and are currently lower than when she was on medication. The diet is tough and finding prepared food products with zero added oils is difficult, but she is keeping on.
The correct spelling of the Indian epic mentioned in “A Yoga Potpourri” (March) is Ramayana. Scholars do not agree on when this work was written; some sources date it from 200 BCE to 200 CE.
