Healthy Diet, Healthy Kids
Our September story “Your Child’s Nutritional IQ” showed how parents can get children to eat a healthy diet by getting them involved in food preparation. We asked our readers on our blog at www.energytimes.com and our Facebook page how they got their kids to eat right; here are two responses.
I have always been straightforward with my children when it comes to eating healthy foods. I have told them in terms they could understand, depending on their age, about disease and how the body works as a machine. I give them examples such as putting sugar in a gas tank of a car instead of gasoline—how would the car operate?
I have worked in health food stores for more than 15 years, and both of my children are well aware of people’s ailments. I remind them that they too can end up sick if they don’t eat foods that help keep their bodies healthy. I also explain that healthy foods come from the earth, and junk food is made with “fake” stuff. My 7-year-old is a great label reader! —Trish
Don’t buy the junk, keep reinforcing their knowledge of good, healthy eating and never sugarcoat the veggies! —Selda
T-Shirts for a Good Cause
I enjoyed the story on Melina Kanakaredes (our July/August cover story). I am interested in the T-shirt that she helped design for the Komen foundation. Can you tell me where I can get it from?
As explained in the story, the “CSI:NY” star became involved in the fight against breast cancer after several women in her life developed the disease. Her T-shirts are available through Hanes and Susan G. Komen for the Cure at www.hanespink.com/melina-kanakaredes.
Emotional Eating Rescue
Every issue of Energy Times brings a new contest to our blog, which you can reach by visiting www.energytimes.com. The prize for this issue is a Rescue Remedy Emotional Eating Kit from Bach. As always, please provide your email address so we can contact you if you win.
The site also features Web Extras, editorial material only available online. This month’s Web Extras includes a delicious apple/squash side dish and even more recipes using alternative sweeteners, along with additional ways to generate more energy. (Who doesn’t need more energy this time of year?) You can also answer our blog question: How do you find a sense of balance in your life?
