Alzheimer's Woes September 03. 2008

In our September Processing Your Brain Issue, we talked with Grammy winner Kathy Mattea about her mother’s battle against Alzheimer’s disease, and what steps Mattea is taking against the possibility of developing the disease herself. We also met a young woman, Emily Balfour of Georgia, whose family is lovingly dealing with her father’s diagnosis. Currently 5 million Americans are suffering from Alzheimer’s, which means many more families have their own stories to tell.

What about you? Has your family been touched by Alzheimer’s disease? How have you coped, and what is it about this experience that you would want to share with others? Let us hear your story!

Using Herbal Medicine April 09. 2008

Everything old is new again: Herbal medicine, one of humanity’s most ancient ways of promoting health, is again becoming increasingly popular. In an age when conventional medicine has become as much a commodity as a healing art, it isn’t surprising that people are searching for ways to maintain their well-being naturally.

What about you? Have you used, or are you currently using, herbal medicine to deal with a specific disorder? Are you going the self-help route, or are you under an herbalist’s (or other trained professional’s) care? Are you using herbs in combination with either conventional medical treatments (surgery, etc.) or other alternative health practices? Let us hear your story!

Prescription Drug Abuse February 08. 2008

The New York medical examiner has reported that the actor Heath Ledger died of an accidental overdose after taking six types of painkillers and sedatives. Following the report, the 28-year-old star's father, Kim Ledger, issued a statement saying that his son's death should serve as a warning to others not to mix prescription drugs. "Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medicine, even at low dosage," Kim Ledger said.

In light of the report and the comments by the actor's father, what role do commercials and advertisements for prescription drugs play? Are these ads helpful to the public, hurtful or are they just "white noise" with no discernable effect?
